Parents of Oklahoma aims to connect parents with resources for financial and other assistance, other parents as a support system, parenting tips & information, and any other information or services that parents find they need.
The focus of the site is the community blog, where members are encouraged to share their stories, as well as read articles by staff writers sharing well-researched articles on parenting, find resources and local events, and get information about how to celebrate holidays (both traditional and bizarre) with their children.
Though the blog is the main focus, there are other features that have importance, including the events calendar (so families can see events coming up each weekend, as well as holiday events or local family-friendly events) and the forum area, where members can sell items, find and share recipes, ask for or offer help in emergencies, and get and give advice on specific situations relevant to their family's needs.
Our site started off as a Facebook group that started needing a bit more organization, and we are currently in the process of moving over. The site rebranded (after obtaining a domain) about a month ago, and we recently "went viral" after a post about the impending teacher walkout here in Oklahoma, thanks to having the most comprehensive list of resources available for parents looking for where their children could go and how they could be fed in the absence of free lunches at school. In 48 hours, we received over 12,500 views and gained several new members.
Over the next few months, we plan to become the go-to site for our state's parents, by staying on top of what parents want and need, and adding local resources and events, as well as ideas for ways families can have fun and learn together. We can't wait to see what's next!
